design by vbaskozos architects & associates

The project is located in Mesaria, on the island of Santorini. Located on a slope, the plot offers an uninterrupted view towards Anafi Island, the settlement of Pyrgos and the Aegean Archipelago.  The climatic conditions are typical to the Cycladic islands, mild winters and summers, high humidity and heavy winds on winter.

What renders Santorenean architecture unique and different from the average Cycladic vernacular architecture is the volcanic territory and the means of habitation that it generates. After the destructive earthquakes of 1958, the reconstruction of several villages and the addition of new public buildings was a dynamic combination of local architecture with the language of the modern movement.  During the following decades Santorini was extensively build due to the growing demands of tourism, a phenomenon which had a negative effect on the unique character of the landscape of local architecture.
