design by vbaskozos architects & associates

The project is located in Messaria, Santorini. Placed on a sloping plot, it overviews the island of Anafi, the Aegean Sea and Pyrgos settlement. The climatic conditions are typical to the Cycladic islands, mild winters and summers, high humidity and heavy winds on winter. In that particular environment the main consideration in old traditional buildings was covering the basic needs of a human. This minimalistic mentality, resulted into what is identified as Cycladic architecture, human oriented, without lavish decorations and unnecessary extra spaces. Building a new structure in a place as Santorini came with its own challenges, since the goal was to incorporate the new elements into the existing scenery, whose shape, size and form is very particular. The concept was to reflect on the traditional architecture and be translated into simple, clean and fluid forms. Ruins of a former structure were on site, so the intention was to preserve characteristic elements and integrate them into the current design. The project is consisted of two semi-detached houses, the first one on the north-east side and the second on the south-east. The main entrance is via the old municipal street.
