The aim of this competition was the design of the new building complex of the School of Fine Arts of the University of Western Macedonia in Florina. The climate conditions in the region, such as low temperature and north cold winds, are extreme during the school’s annual operation. Additionally, the poor environmental surroundings don’t foster with the school’s function and activities. Confronting this hostile environment (landscape and old existing educational buildings), the intention was to reduce or completely eliminate negative environmental impacts. Thus the project emphasizes on a subterranean form inspired by the vernacular architecture of underground buildings.
