The project is a one-storey residence located in Exo Gonia, Santorini. The area is non-densely built and the site is on a sloping plot. The goal was to create a contemporary building, using elements of traditional Cycladic architecture. The design follows the minimalistic forms and textures of vernacular houses on the island. It consists of clean-cut, white volumes topped with arched roofs. Pergolas were incorporated to provide sufficient shading and to highlight the entrance and the outdoor area.
The layout was formed to create different levels of privacy and to separate the spaces according to their functions. The south side consists of the kitchen, the dining area and the living room, whereas the three bedrooms along with their en suite bathrooms are located on the north and east section. One of them is the master bedroom.
The mezzanine floors above the living room and the master bedroom, exploit the extra height created by the arched roof. The basement is used as an ancillary space of the house, mostly for storage.
The windows and exterior doors follow the pattern of the traditional ones, with the glass windows outside and the wooden shutters inside. On the east and west side, the openings are small and narrow to protect the interior from direct sunlight.
The building is constructed with local stone, plastered with pozzolanic materials to match the character of the island and provide continuous forms. For a pop of color and contrast, the wooden windows and doors are painted in a bright blue shade.
On the landscape design, small, decked areas were created surrounding the house to provide outdoor relaxing areas.
