The project is the reconstruction and expansion of an existing two-storey house, built in the 1960-70s. Guided by the owner’s needs and requests, the design included a total restoration and the addition of new rooms to the existing building. An open swimming pool was also added to the outdoor space of the plot.
The building consists of two separate apartments, of approximately 120 sq. m. each, one on the ground floor and one on the first floor. The residences have their own separate entrances. The one on the first floor can be reached through an external staircase.
The ground floor apartment is connected to the basement by an internal staircase, leading to a parking space and storage rooms. A basement light well (areaway) provides adequate lighting and ventilation of these spaces on the southwest side of the building. The interior layout of the ground floor has been redesigned and a new space has been added to expand the living room area of the apartment. The first-floor apartment consists of a kitchen, living room, dining area and three bedrooms with en suite bathrooms.
In an effort to integrate the individual elements of the building, the facade is shaped to form a single set of metal pergola elements using metal cross-sections, horizontal and vertical, visually completing the individual solid volumes of the building in a simple rectangular shape. The exterior staircase leading to the first floor has repetitive vertical openings, providing an additional side view of the northeastern border of the plot.
