Shop at Kifissias avenue

location: Kifissias Avenue, Athens | site area: 865 m2 | bua: 1.108 m2 | design-documentation: 1999
designed by mob architects

The project is an intervention and reconstruction of an existing structure of reinforced concrete, to be used as shops.

The building consists of a main rectangular volume and two smaller ones. The site has two street facades with a height difference of one floor level. From each street, there is an independent access, in order that the building can be used as one or two shops. During the design process the exact use of the building was not known except for the idea that the building was meant to be used commercially.

The continuous increase of land value along Kifisias Avenue dictates architectural design to serve marketability. The main quest is to bring out by means of forms and materials, the building – merchandise, as well as the accommodated product or firm.

Correlations and possibilities of different materials must be applicable on the same proposed shell. Simultaneously the range of colors and the textures of materials should create various impressions. The matter concerns a structure that is ‘’alive’’ and flexible in the change of ‘’skin’’ within a game of alternatives.

Externally, marble and metal were used for cladding, and paving blocks and marble for the flooring. In the interior, wooden and marble flooring was used and the staircase is made of metal and glass.
